Week 11- Bienvenidos A La Misión

After 11 weeks in the mission, I have lost my first battle with food. Shout out Pollo Granjero because for two days I couldn't take 10 steps without vomiting everywhere. I know Queen Wilde is worrying right now, but fear not your baby boy is back going with full strength 😁. An 80-year-old Guatemalan Hermana gave me some mystery medicine in a shot glass and this worked wonders. Look I don't ask questions. Gracias, agua, and sí can only get you so far.
Yeyko
So, this has been a continuous roller-coaster. First, he lives about 40 minutes walking and somehow almost every time we choose to walk over there (almost every day) he is not there. I promise you the walk there is a lot faster than the one back… and you might be asking why we don't just call or text him first? Which is where I would like to take the time to apologize to my parents for not answering texts in the fastest manner. I now understand where this can cause some issues. Get hyped for 2027 Mom and Dad. But anyways, Yeyko is really progressing. He's not drinking anymore and he's really working to be better every day which is amazing. One day we had a miracle where after walking 40 minutes to his house we walked all the way back and while going through the market right next to our house, he ran up to us, and we were able to share a short message and he bought us some snacks. Look I'm not gonna say he owed us that but like…
Bastante enfermo 🫣😦😮😭💩
So yes, I was quite sick. Thought I would give a more in-depth story. Thursday at around 11ish Elder Willis said we should go to Pollo Granjero to eat. Keep in mind he is basically Guatemalan at this point. He's been here 23 months and nothing affects him. As I look back, I realize the promptings to say I wanted Domino's may not have been just from my stomach. But yes, I went w/ the “safe” choice of chicken nuggets. After we ate and started walking to our next appointment, 30 minutes later, I told Elder I had to sit down for a second and then needed a choco banano to ease my stomach. What a waste of $0.30 cause I threw up all over the street 5 minutes later. The rest of the day followed suit and only got worse… the next day and a half I literally just couldn't eat because I would just throw up or have to sprint to the bathroom. Once I could eat the food was almost an equivalent to Ruth's Chris with how hungry I was and wow how I love Ruth's Chris. It's a shame the 6-year supply of bug spray (for the country) in my suitcase couldn't have prevented this catastrophe.
Gringos vs Latinos ⚽️
Late last pday, we suited up 5v5 gringos vs Latinos first to 10 wins. After a slow start, gringos down 3-7, and some motivation from ZL Smith, we pulled back from what seemed to be impossible. But the mission really does have miracles, everyone. Gringos brought it back and won 10-8. The Latinos were devastated to say the least. I mean losing at ur own sport… Now look I don't just give people credit, but I do give credit where credit is due. Wow, did I go crazy in this match. Had every Latino come up to me after and tell me, “Elder Wilde juegue muy bein”. Too kind. It's a shame the cameras weren't recording to see my bicycle kick goal from center field. Played it cool though. I had to stay composed. But it was truly remarkable. Wish you were all there, guess you are just going to have to trust me that it happened. This could be a story I tell my kids about. A David vs Goliath equivalent.
Noche de Cine (SOUL)
So this week our activity was a movie night. Which we also had like 30 people show up to so that was a W. Unfortunately, my request of Happy Gilmore 2 was unsuccessful. But we ended up watching Soul. Now I will admit with the movie being in Spanish I struggled to understand everything. But because it is a kid's movie, I was able to pick up on the general messages, and it was actually such an unreal movie and reminded me of so many things I have been taught and also knew.
In the movie the main character is a musician hyper-fixated on his future as a pianist. His life is consumed by it. In short, the movie goes on, and he switched bodies/perspectives with someone else. He comes to notice all the things that bring him joy that he had not paid attention to before due to his hyper-fixation on what he believed to be his purpose. It's not only the big things that happen but also, and maybe even more importantly, the little things that happen every day.
There's a story that goes hand in hand with this and I couldn't stop thinking about it the whole time. The story goes that there was a fisherman who caught the best fish every time he went out. He would come home with 2 and sell one and for our sake buy some Swig and return to his family and eat on the beach with them. One day a businessman approached him and told him he needed to get a bigger boat and with his talent catch more fish. The man asked why. To sell all the fish and be able to get more boats and hire more people. Then what the man asks. You continue to grow your fleets and then can eventually sell your company and have lots of money. The fisherman than asks where he ends up after this. Where the businessman responds, on a beach with some fish and swig with your family.
My dad would always tell us things mean nothing if you don't have people to spend them with. This is so true and also goes so well with both the stories. It's not always the things that we initially look at that matter most. The “big picture” or “goal.” But those that are around us every day.
Spiritual thought
2 Nephi 33 For none of these iniquities come of the Lord; for he doeth that which is good among the children of men; and he doeth nothing save it be plain unto the children of men; and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.
The Gospel of Jesus is a message meant to be heard and meant to bless the lives of everyone possible. The Gospel is free to all of those that come to it and blesses all of it that do. We are lucky to have prophets and apostles today guiding us through our lives. Helping us come back to the path. I'm so excited for this upcoming general conference and my first in the field. I know there are messages for you and are intended to help us with our days today. Always remember to, “Think Celestial”. Love you all, Elder Wilde
